A fallen angel walks down a path through a purple rain. Last April I had a dream that Prince was singing to me, telling me everything is going to be okay. I never really thought much about him before then. Since, I have been reading lyrics and pondering quotes from his interviews. I think of him as a sage that leads us through the Purple Rain and into a place of healing and higher consciousness. I have PTSD as a result of multi-generational trauma. This occurs when traumatic events from one generation are carried over to future generations through behavior patterns affecting coping mechanisms and even parenting skills. My maternal grandfather was abusive and shot my grandmother, killing her. She was just 35 years old. My mom was only 14 and a witness. She repeated the pattern by marrying an abusive man. To be fair, my father was a war veteran who probably struggled with PTSD. I was an only child and didn't have anyone I could confide in. Music and especially Prince music was my confidant. I put on headphones and his music drowned out the noise. I still do this. You never really recover from PTSD, you learn to cope. For me, this means constantly reminding myself that not every loud voice is a fight, not every bang is a broken bone, the deer shot by a hunter is not my grandmother. I use Prince quotes as a channel for healing and motivation. Prince has left us all a path if we choose to take it. One that leads to transformation. Will you take the journey?
