This artwork explores the emotional experience of learning music through color and movement. It was inspired by watching my child learn the cello, a process filled with effort, pressure, frustration, and moments of self-doubt. Through this experience, I began to understand music as more than a technical skill. It is also a space for emotion, vulnerability, and expression.
Inspired by Prince's layering of rhythm and emotion, I use contrasting colors, energetic brushwork, and flowing movement to create a sense of tension and release. The colorful eye in this piece acts as a guide, moving through the instruments and translating sound into color, motion, and feeling. The cello becomes more than an instrument; it becomes the place where the story settles, holding both the difficulty and the beauty of learning.
I'm participating in The People's Museum for Prince not because of a personal emotional attachment to Prince as an individual, but because of what his story represents. Prince's presence as an uncompromising creative voice demonstrated that artists coming from outside the mainstream can create freely without conforming to expectations. My favorite Prince song is Purple Rain. It reminds me that art can hold both intensity and tenderness, and that honest expression is always worth pursuing.
