An homage to Prince's 1986 film Under the Cherry Moon and the Parade album, this quilt was made with a specific person in mind: someone Suzanne Wint first met at a screening of the film in the year after Prince's death, whose dedication to building community around Prince's story is woven into every design choice. The pattern — Slashed Squares, using a slice-and-dice technique — is a structural play on the song Girls and Boys, and the coordinated chaos of the blocks reflects the contradictions of the film itself. Hidden within: a deep purple substitution, fabric printed with purple cabbage (a nod to Christopher's insult to Mary), and glow-in-the-dark elements. The backing fabric bears an uncanny resemblance to the Parade tour drum kit.
Suzanne Wint is an independent ethnomusicologist and fiber artist based in Saint Paul, MN, whose series of Prince-themed quilts has developed from her research on public mourning and commemoration.
