Kurt Shafai

I don't typically draw humans, though I wanted to honor Prince by drawing him. I chose to reference a picture from the Purple Rain tour, with Prince in his iconic Computer Blue outfit, because I felt that the colors and the mood of the picture really stuck with me. I blocked out the colors from scratch and used a variety of different brushes to match the different textures throughout the image. While doing so, I listened to a series of podcasts with Susan Rogers talking about working with Prince, and I really loved hearing her stories about the way he worked as an artist. Originally I felt like I wouldn't be able to do Prince any justice by drawing him, but this drawing remains one of my favorites to this day.
