On MTV in 1984 Prince came on the television and the video was Little Red Corvette. I was only 10 years old but I stood in front of the television frozen, mesmerized, wondering him. He was beautiful. A few months later the song When Doves Cry comes on the radio. I love that song and I sung that song so much everybody would just tell me to shut up stop singing that song. Then the movie Purple Rain came out and I saw it 40 times in the theater. I bought all his previous albums. I would always hold a place for him deep in my heart and mind for a lifetime.
Fast forward to 2016. My world and my life changed in April 21st, 2016. I had dreamed he passed away 2 weeks prior but didn't think the dream meant anything. I cried all day before I even got the news. I knew something was terribly wrong in the world. I didn't know how I could even go on. I lost 10 lbs in 2 weeks from not eating or sleeping. And honestly, I hadn't followed him that closely anymore. But the first photo I saw of him after he passed, the wind got knocked out of me. This was someone I so deeply loved and I didn't even realize it.
I spent the next few years catching up on everything and reading books about him like DMSR that I got from a college library across the country on a loan.
Then I married a little man who I thought was my Prince but turned out to be frog. I had a lot of trauma to recover from. I started painting Prince shoes and making symbols. First out of clay. Very fragile clay but I spent a lot of time on them anyway. These new hobbies were very therapeutic. I couldn't believe I could actually do these shoes! My passion to put so much effort into making them came from my love for Prince. When it comes to something Prince related, my desire is perfection. I think about how he always pushed people into doing more than they thought they could. I feel like in a way he pushed me. I have healed during this process of creating things inspired by Prince.
P.S. I like interpretation of lyrics also. Like when he says ELECTRIC WORD LIFE. I finally realized that it's referring to when God created us, He spoke us into existence. Our materials are dust of the earth but we were spoken. Everything is made by sound. 💜
